The best pubs for eating

Six local Berkshire pubs and three in North Hampshire are listed in the Michelin Eating Out in Pubs 2008, launched last week.

None of the total of nine local pubs is among the 76 new additions this year, but Berkshire pubs re-listed include The Crab, Chieveley, The Pot Kiln, Frilsham, The Dundas Arms, Kintbury, The Red House, Marsh Benham, The Angel, Woolhampton, and The Royal Oak, Yattendon.

The three North Hampshire pubs included in the guide are The Wellington Arms, Baughurst, Carnarvon Arms, Burghclere, and Marco Pierre White’s Yew Tree inn, Highclere.

This years guide includes 564

of the best pubs serving good food in the UK and Ireland.

Every pub has a full page entry, with colour photograph and text giving an insight into the pub’s character. Other information includes opening times, directions, prices, typical dishes and beer served.

All the pubs in the guide were selected for the quality of their cooking, but a number receive a special mention due to extra qualities, such as a delightful setting, charm and character, excellent service, overall value for money, or exceptional cooking, distinguished in the guide by a “we most liked” stamp of approval.

"The food was fresh and delicious and the desserts were all home made. I can not fault The Angel on providing a most enjoyable evening for myself and my friends. Since changing ownership it has improved beyond measure, giving everyone a warm and friendly welcome. I was told a new Italian style garden will be open for the long summer nights where you can dine outside. I wanted to reserve my table there and then. I just wanted to pass on Lucy and my sincere thanks to you, and all the staff at the Angel for lunch on Saturday. It went absolutely perfectly, and was a real highlight of the day.

I think that every one of our guests commented to us afterwards on what a fantastic meal it was, and in several cases was the best pork / chicken / gnocchi they had ever eaten.
